About Us

Wickford & Runwell United FC was founded in 2008 initially running two men's senior teams, however due to the success of the club and a restructure a third team has now been affiliated with the Essex FA and as of June 2024 the club is currently running at approximately 60 registered members.  The 1st team and 2nd team play their football in the Sunday Southend Sceptre League (Premier League and Division 2) and the new 1st team reserves will be playing in the Southend & Basildon Sunday League (Division 1).

The club has always had a strong community presence, but with the restructure and growth of the club we are looking forward to this growing and seeing what the future holds.

To give back, each season we host a charity football match, with a different nominated charity each year with an average of £1000 raised yearly.

2023/24 Season - 1st Team

The 2023/24 season begun with alot of changes at the club and an influx of new faces, club captain Tom Piggott stepped up to be 1st Team Manager and turned straight Scott Duggins to come in as joint first team manager alongside him, a familiar face to some already with the club but a new face to many including club owner and chairman. From there the influx of new faces begun to emerge, a large youth intake throughout pre season followed the promotion of Sam & Tom Merritt, stepping up from the 2nd Team.

Pre season then begun and huge improvements where already being seen, a clear way of playing, a clear choice of formation and clarity of individual positions throughout. The results then followed with a really positive pre season adding to the new positive vibe within the team. It was time for the season to begin and see what we could really do.

The 1st Team where entered into the Sceptre Sunday League Division 1 (Prem) the highest the club had been in previous years since being founded in 2008, this was already causing moments of concern being new management and half a new team with fresh faces. After the first game we knew the challenge & task ahead, losing 3-2, all be it with positive signs with the lads finding their feet. The first win then arrived, game 2 of the season, the first round of the Mike Wigget Division 1 cup, a cup run possible?

Next up was another cup, unfortunately a controversial 3-2 loss at home in the first round of the county cup, something we entered in the hope to get some fun away days challenging teams from other leagues in Essex, in fact it resulted in a first round home fixture against a team in our league, not quite gone to plan.

The response from this was very impressive from the team, going 4 games unbeaten scoring 20 and only conceding 6, winning 3 and drawing 1, but the highlight being a 9-0 victory in the second round of the Mike Wigget Division 1 Cup. The cup run continues, with already two rounds completed before the end of September. A story very much to be continued for many of months.

Next fixture Fryerns, 4-3 loss at home - TBC
